The world has been sold a magic trick. A recent research article from MIT Sloan, titled Algorithms Trap Us in the Familiar. Can They Also Spark Breakthroughs? points out that most digital tools are designed for efficiency, not critical or creative thinking, exploration and reasoning, and they tend to “stymie innovation.”

These standard LLM-based algorithms channel you toward popular, familiar information, leading to convergence on the same ideas. Teams, organizations, and individuals in competitive situations using the same generic LLM tools can’t differentiate themselves from the crowd to gain a competitive advantage. LLMs kill your thinking and creativity, stifle innovation and make you mediocre at best.

Harvard Business Review (HBR) research article: AI and machine learning Researchers Asked LLMs for Strategic Advice. They Got “Trendslop” in Return. The study of 15,000 interactions across frontier models revealed a blunt problem for enterprise architecture with models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini: “These models are built to sound useful enough, even when their answers are wrong.”

Like MIT’s research, Harvard also says “these models don’t reliably analyze context.” They repeat popular internet patterns and present them as strategy. Users accept slop as intelligence, favouring agreement with the quick answers produced instead of rigour and accuracy.

The parlour trick works because it optimizes answers that make the user feel good about themselves. Like politicians, the LLM tells people what they want to hear, and they don’t bother fact-checking, making them intellectually lazy. The LLM is built around the premise of building clean, confident arguments, not finding the objective truth.

HBR researchers tested seven common business tensions, including whether a business should pursue differentiation or commoditization. The models showed a fixed preference, with no analysis and favoured familiar strategic directions from popular strategy-development writings found online. Regardless of business context and stated priorities. The models keep drifting toward the popular strategies, not to the right one for the particular business. The research called this trendslop!

Better Prompting Doesn’t Fix the Problem

LLMs are glorified search engines designed for speed and to prioritize popular, relevant results, and don’t provide you with any new knowledge, just pretrained information pretending to be intelligence. It builds mediocrity: “Creating what we call ideation bubbles: clusters of similar ideas that represent a dangerous homogeneity of thought,” says MIT.

This forces users to develop prompting skills rather than the more important, critical thinking and judgment skills they need to build winning strategies for their organization or themselves.

HBR says: Clearer instructions only shifted bias by two percent. More industry context by eleven percent. Changing the order of options in the prompt moved the recommendation by only nineteen percent.

Therefore, the reasoning capabilities of models from Anthropic, for example, are pure hype and fiction—information aggregators can’t reason—machines don’t think—don’t be fooled by the parlour tricks.

Another MIT research paper: Stop Prompting AI. Start Directing I, says it’s best to “Configure AI to interrogate your data.” “While conversational generative AI can be used to test thinking, an agentic system can hold a large volume of data and sustain analyses across entire data sets without losing the thread.”

Both MIT and Harvard say that switching from LLMs to working with multiple agents in concert is a better way forward—the future! I. Socrates: The Method of Productive Ignorance The Socratic Method begins by dismantling the illusion of knowledge. Socrates elenchus is the logical argument that disproves or refutes another claim, serving as the main technique of the method. It is not a search for answers but a disciplined structure for doubt: forcing definitions, testing consistency, and exposing the gap between opinion and understanding. For Applied Intelligence, this is the foundational move: the six steps re-enact this Socratic friction between stimulus and response, fully engaging uncertainty, establishing that the process of questioning is more valuable than the comfort of fast answers. Because when AI delivers finished outputs so quickly, it bypasses essential aporía, the impassable or without a way forward, which is the very state that initiates critical thinking.

II. Aristotle: The Primacy of Practical Wisdom Where Socrates clears the ground, Aristotle builds the structure of judgment for Applied intelligence. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle’s book on moral philosophy, Aristotle explores human flourishing… how to live well through the active exercise of moral and intellectual virtue. He distinguishes episteme — universal, scientific knowledge from phronesis, practical wisdom, which is the capacity to deliberate well about what is good and advantageous in particular situations. Phronesis cannot be acquired through artificiality; it must be forged through empirical experiences, habit, and the long cultivation of character, virtue—toward purposeful flourishing. AI may accumulate episteme, but it has never lived, never acted, never suffered or confronted friction, trial, error and correction. AI lacks prohairesis — the integrated movement of reason and desire that constitutes deliberate choice. Applied Intelligence draws on Aristotle to insist that authentic intelligence is not the possession of information, but the experienced, situated capacity to judge and act well under uncertainty: wisdom!

III. Descartes: The Irreducible Subject Descartes drives the point inward. In the Meditations, radical doubt strips away every extrinsic claim until one indubitable fact remains: “Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum” translates to “I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am.” Note: ‘Doubt’ comes first, and there is a conscious “I” that accompanies every act of thought. The thinking is inseparable from the thinker; judgment requires a subject who bears responsibility for the thought. A machine processes symbols without an “I think” accompanying its representations. Applied Intelligence rests on this Cartesian truth: to outsource reasoning is metaphysically incoherent because it severs the thinking from the conscious being who thinks and chooses.

IV. Kant: The Critical Limit Kant provides the guardrails. In his work, the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant demonstrates that reason overreaches when it claims knowledge beyond the conditions of possible experience. Pure reason operating without the synthetic unity of apperception — the “I think” that accompanies all representations — produces not wisdom but transcendental illusion. AI is precisely this: pure informal reasoning divorced from experience, consciousness, and the critical awareness of its own limits. Kant warns that such unmoored reason generates antinomies (a conflict or contradiction between two laws, rules, or logical ideas that seem completely reasonable and true), dressed up as certainty. Applied Intelligence uses this critique to expose why machine outputs, however seemingly sophisticated, remain philosophical illusions of knowledge rather than judgments born of understanding.

Taken together, these four pillar thinkers form a complete arc: Socrates teaches us to begin in doubt; Aristotle teaches that wisdom must be lived and practiced; Descartes teaches that thinking requires a conscious subject; and Kant teaches us that reason without experiential limits destroys itself. AI violates all of them. It skips uncertainty and doubt! It has no lived experience! It possesses no consciousness, and it operates without critical restraint. This is ignorance, not intelligence.

LLMs are effectively a parlour trick with untrustworthy outputs, says computer scientist Gary Marcus, a staunch critique of LLMs and AI hype. And public intellectual, former MIT professor and ‘the father of modern linguistics’, Noam Chomsky, puts it more bluntly: “LLMs have not achieved anything in this domain…achieved zero. It’s a theory of anything goes…that includes all the laws of nature, the ones we know and the ones we do not know yet. With a supercomputer, it can look at 45 terabytes of data and find some superficial regularities, and it can imitate. ChatGPT has done nothing!”

LLMs are a construct, an impossible language, Chomsky calls it, only understood by the machine itself, and it’s the only way that ChatGPT can perform, by creating and adhering to its own rules. This is intellectually dishonest and dangerous for humanity.

Uncertainty: The Beginning of Knowledge

AI is unfamiliar with the Socratic Method, which recognizes that our ignorance is the beginning of knowledge: why the wisest mind is the one willing to say, “I do not know”. AI is the antithesis of the disciplined, step-by-step structured reasoning that formal logic decision-making requires. It eliminates the very uncertainty that creates meaning, because meaning is forged in the tension between what we know and what we do not know.

Treating consciousness, reasoning, and judgment as outsourceable to AI is a philosophical error that both Descartes’ cogito and Kant’s critique of pure reason expose as incoherent.

We are not merely becoming less skilled; we are endangering what makes us human, our ability to embrace uncertainty and thrive in it, which is what drives our will to meaning!

In the age of artificial certainty, large language models and automation tools do not understand human context, and context is everything. AI is just the appearance of intelligence, which speaks without a speaker, delivers conclusions without consciousness, and promises final answers where none exist.

Socrates would say that when a society starts valuing polished answers over examined questions, it stops thinking. AI offers the illusion of certainty, and certainty, as Socrates would have seen it, is the mark of ignorance, not wisdom. AI does not hesitate. It does not pause to wonder if it has missed something, because it cannot wonder. It is built to generate—to retrieve information quickly and engage in informal logic: connecting the dots…finding the next word that sounds intelligent enough. It remixes and hallucinates with language fluency that looks like thought, but it’s just a mirror that shapes thought without ever knowing what thought is.

Large language models have become the ultimate confidence artists, selling certainty at industrial scale while operating in a state of sophisticated ignorance—producing answers without comprehension, conclusions without responsibility, and finality without the faintest grasp of what finality costs.

And we’re still trying to figure out for what? Who asked for this? Where is the value to humanity?

When the ground beneath us feels unstable, we do well to look down and see what is actually holding us up. Four thinkers, separated by centuries, built the thinking architecture that still supports those who value judgment. Socrates gave us the method. Aristotle gave us the practice. Descartes gave us the subject. Kant gave us the limit. Together, they form a single, unbroken argument against the outsourcing of the mind—and have laid the foundation for Applied Intelligence, which no machine can weaken because it rests on the irreducible fact of human consciousness.

The Existential Gap — Uncertainty and Meaning

Viktor Frankl, surviving the unspeakable, wrote his best-selling book, Man’s Search for Meaning, and noticed something that the age of instant answers seems determined to miss. Nevertheless, this is another in an increasingly growing line of accusations levelled against authors suspected of using AI. Agents love the big payday, so you know if his own agents pulled it. We can only surmise that the amount of “AI” in the manuscript was just too obvious.

Falade maintained his innocence on social media, stating he only used an AI tool for research rather than writing the prose itself. To be fair to him, AI detection tools are notorious for producing false positives. Just like LLMs in general, hallucinations are intrinsic, making LLMs untrustworthy.

Therefore, the purpose here is not to judge, but to make the point that “artificial” will always be fleeting, and “real” is enduring.

Championing efficiency tools for an economy that does not yet have the underlying productive capacity to utilize them puts the cart before the horse. Prosperity requires foundational investment in infrastructure, manufacturing, and fundamental economic development first; only then can advanced automation tools find meaningful deployment and value.

• The Gap: Future Caribbean has substituted innovation theatre for the harder work of building credible capital pipelines and economic fundamentals. It has not demonstrated that its model produces authentic, sustainable growth, nor has it connected the dots between a single technology category and measurable regional prosperity. Without this connective tissue, the strategy remains a bet dressed in the fallacy of AI inevitability.

Conclusion: The Fantasy and the Reality

The Caribbean does not need another grand theory imposed from above. It does not need to be told that a single, dazzling technology will leapfrog necessary decades of hard-won development. The fantasy of Agentic AI as a universal shortcut — the notion that autonomous software can conjure prosperity out of thin air — is a distraction dressed as destiny.

There is no hack for sustained growth. There never was. The past proves it, the present demands it, and the future will reward only those who accept it: prosperity is built from the bottom up, by entrepreneurs solving real problems with real products and solutions, by investors with real capital, governments with progressive policies and by economies with real infrastructure foundations. Not by contests. Not by buzzwords. And not by top-down academic theatre that treats the region as a laboratory for someone else’s technological fashion.

If the Caribbean is to prosper, it must reject the hype and return to the fundamentals. Build the horse. Then attach the cart. Not the other way around.

The purpose of this article is to show how one can apply their intelligence effectively to think critically to uncover the objective truth about their own existence. And how not to cognitively surrender your mind, but seek clarity and precision in your thinking. The applied intelligence process is a structured thinking system that helps people think through decisions, solve problems and build strategies to complete and win. It underscores the importance of definition in clarifying our thoughts, highlighting how crucial it is to define concepts and ideas precisely and how to apply knowledge effectively to the problem you’re trying to solve, or to understand how outcomes occur in the universe.

In The Republic (514a–520a, Book VII), the philosopher Plato presents the Allegory of the Cave—life is like being trapped in a dark cave, with prisoners chained and forced to watch shadows cast on a wall by a fire. The Cave is a metaphor for how many live their lives: trapped in a structured illusion. The shadows are all they ever see. The prisoners are unwilling to challenge the prevailing constructs that dominate their existence. To them, this is reality. Even after one prisoner escapes, sees the sun, experiences reality, goes back into the cave to tell the others, nobody believes him. The Cave, therefore, is their reality, all they’ve ever known, and shadows are all they’ve ever experienced. Dependency on a constructed illusion becomes stronger than the pursuit of their own personal mental liberation.

People experience reality through belief systems shaped by the societal structures and culture in their world. For Black people, these systems and structures have existed for over 400+ years. But in the 21^st century, this legacy can no longer be used as an excuse. Still, many in the Black population, whether they know it or not, subconsciously have become prisoners in The Cave, adhering to the illusion of shadows on the wall that drive their existence.

This type of existence has undoubtedly had an enduring effect on many Black psyches. Allowing oneself to be psychologically chained to past traumas. But if you don’t get over trauma, then trauma will run your life. You become dependent, and suffering becomes a familiar and comforting existence is an illusion.

Subconsciously chained, unaware and unwilling to escape The Cave. Never pursuing the energy of the sun…to power your inner ambitions.

Self-imposed mental enslavement, behaving and adopting a dependency and victim culture, settling and relying on paternalistic systems of control to be applied to you. Your own manifestation of an impenetrable psychological prison within the systemic environment.

This serves as a compounding weight of a white supremacy culture and structures, designed to extract all the economics and suppression of the Black human condition and identity. But remember, it only succeeds if your psyche allows it to. The making of your existence begins in your mind.

Socrates talked about how many among us choose to live an unexamined life, one without critical reflection, curiosity, and self-awareness, devoid of true human purpose. Many Blacks, overwhelmed by the inertia of racism-based trauma, settle to live a Cave-like subconscious existence. Self-silenced and in the shadows. Bowing down to systems of control, without ever coming out of the darkness to claim their authentic place in the sun, this too, Socrates would say, is truly a life not worth living.

The Silent Surrender

“Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.”

Nietzsche’s quote captures the psychological safety often sought from self-deception. Many fall for comforting stories to mask our trauma, and actively practice avoidance of truth or engage in self-distraction to avoid the discomfort of reality.

Although finding and standing in the sun can be energizing and liberating, it can initially cause chaos in the unprepared mind, the deep sense of loss of comforting illusions.

Many prefer to be comfortable in their formed beliefs rather than have the courage to rethink their worldview and pursue all the energy and growth the sun has to offer.

The overbearing nature of racist systems of control embedded in white-supremacy culture is also reflected in their institutions. Unfortunately, many Blacks have chosen to be obedient, cognitively surrender to the systemic environment, choosing to let it define them.

They pull the chute to release their anxieties and fears about pursuing economic wealth and power through entrepreneurship, for example, or supporting those that do. They acquiesce instead, aiming to integrate for acceptance into white supremacy culture, wrongly believing that if they aspire and hold those same values, they will be accepted.

Shrinking and blending, cowardly disappearing into the shadows of the corporate systemic environment, giving up the pursuit of economic self-determination for fake status and no power.

They end up becoming tools for the systemic environment, cast into the illusion of inclusion, the performative circuit of corporate events, basking in receiving recognition awards for their obedience, trading the pursuit of equity and power for themselves and community, for posting for Likes on social media.

Many of the Black corporate elite perform for social media, but behind the scenes do nothing, and worse, try to avoid the hard conversations as to why they continue to find excuses not to invest in Black entrepreneurship. Some believe giving donations to Black social programs is a show of “giving back,” but that’s all it is: a show. But that doesn’t create wealth and build intergenerational opportunities for future generations. So we can stop begging governments and others to fund what other communities regularly fund themselves through their own community wealth.

We must stop seeking validation and acceptance from those who will never accept us; we don’t need anyone to validate our place in the sun.

Black Canadian ‘billionaire’ Michael Lee-Chin (MLC) pledged $30 million to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in April 2003. The ROM is one of the greatest symbols of colonial legacy in Canada. MLC’s $30 million pledge made him the lead donor, buying him the rights to name the ROM Crystal after himself: the Michel Lee-Chin Crystal.

Reminiscent of building idols to one’s own self, and it’s worth mentioning the aesthetic backlash: critics labelling the MLC Crystal an intrusive or impractical addition to the historic streetscape. So, he gave $30 million and still wasn’t accepted. He played himself.

Nevertheless, the point to be made is that instead of using his wealth to build a $30 million investment fund for promising Black entrepreneurs in Canada or even a Black Community Centre focused on education, technology, Black mental health and performance, creating opportunities for young people to build careers, etc. MLC built an eyesore instead. Failing to understand that a true legacy is not in building idols to oneself, but in creating opportunities for others with your wealth.

MLC, since I’ve known him, has always talked about “Walking-the-Talk,” preaching entrepreneurship and the importance of wealth creation for Black communities to achieve their place in the sun. Yet, at his chance to actually “walk-the-talk,” he turns around and gives $30 million to the ROM, a symbol of colonialism. All for personal recognition from the same systemic environment he’s been advising Black people to take action to break dependency from.

For all his amazing entrepreneurial and wealth-creation accomplishments, which we must give him credit for… because there can be no doubt about that. But sadly, however, Michael Lee-Chin remains a man unable to escape Plato’s metaphorical Cave—regardless of wealth, his mind is still not free.

(Note: According to the public record in Canada, Mr. Lee-Chin has also donated considerably to the systemic environment over the last 25 years or so: $11 million to Joseph Brant Hospital, $10 million to the University of Toronto, $5 million to McMaster University, and $1 million to Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation. Along with seventeen honours and awards.)

It’s Not About Income, It’s About Equity

If you believe there is another way to achieve power and respect, other than through your economics, then you’re just obfuscating and rationalizing in abstract distraction. Unable to escape Plato’s Cave. Stuck believing in shadows on the wall.

High income and status can’t deliver wealth and power; only ownership and equity can. Power flows from the bottom-up through wealth, which buys you political power and influence. The sooner you understand how the real world works, the better off you’ll be. For the survival of Black people, and their ability to thrive in the 21st Century, building a bedrock cultural mindset is paramount.

Entrepreneurship is the genesis of real wealth and power in the universe! There can be no doubt about that. This is how other groups have done it from the beginning of time. It is no different for Black people; regardless of the racism obstacles in our way, if you don’t let them distract you, you can make it if you apply your intelligence and determination. No one is going to give you anything or share their gains with you, ill-gotten or not. No one is coming to save you! Absolutely no one. But making excuses and clinging to past traumas will absolutely drown you in the depths of despair.

We can’t ever shrink ourselves, our ambitions and our place in the sun to the systemic environment. Exercise your own free will, control over your faculties of perception, insight, and judgment because it is incumbent upon you to satisfy your own human condition, to act in your own self-interest, with a level of sophistication for your own self-preservation, and prosperity!

This is the most universal of human traits. It’s human nature, so exercise it. Stop wasting time with all these flaky theories and social constructs. You just have an infinitesimal time here on this plane; wasting it trying to conform is just stupid.

Keep in mind how fast things pass us by—those that are now, and those to come. Human existence flows past us like a river: the “what” is in constant flux, the “why” has a thousand variations. It’s up to you to make your own life, not that of others, making it for you.

Aristotle wrote that Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence. But it’s not a human right. Happiness can only be achieved through intellectual contemplation, logic and reason, and that deep critical thinking is the true path to wisdom, which requires productive engagement with the objective truth.

Otherwise, ignorance and irrationality will prevail over you, Aristotle said, leading to a life of endless suffering and regret in not pursuing your authentic self.

The truth does set your mind free.

Breakthroughs usually do not come from dramatic leaps of insight and revelations, but rather from building upon what has already been discovered. As a result, the most productive and transformative innovations often arise by expanding on previous knowledge. Sir Isaac Newton, arguably the most influential scientist and polymath in history, is well known for formulating the laws of motion and universal gravitation, which transformed our understanding of the universe and laid the groundwork for modern science.

In 1675, when writing to fellow scientist Robert Hooke, Newton stated, “If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.”

Past knowledge forms the foundation for future knowledge and expertise through applying disciplined steps in pursuit of innovation and change. These are not usually dramatic leaps, but rather more of an applied intelligence-based approach. Involving purposeful steps that lead to solving complex problems scientifically, by developing strategies that can be effectively implemented.

The six-step applied intelligence (6ai) process is a framework for creating strategies capable of addressing our most pressing challenges and ambitions. It is based on the Socratic method, named after the Greek philosopher Socrates, who used this approach to explore ethical dilemmas and question conventional wisdom. The core of the Socratic method is about guiding individuals to discover knowledge on their own.

The applied intelligence (ai) process is an open-ended questioning system that promotes probing, critical thinking, and greater clarification. By challenging assumptions and belief systems, ai generates objective truths and axioms that advance our understanding. It encourages multiple perspectives and identifies gaps in logic that can then be used to develop sound strategic solutions.

So ai emphasizes information prioritization, contextual understanding, and insight discovery, capturing users’ authentic aspirations and combining them with real knowledge to realize their vision through comprehensive, actionable strategy building.

The 6ai process is straightforward: start with what you know or something you desire to achieve, and proceed in a conversational mode. Continually iterating and moving beyond what you know or believe you knew — towards knowledge acquisition and growth.

Progressive Steps Forward

6ai is a step-by-step progressive process that retrieves and develops highly relevant information, turning insights into strategy because maximizing the productive value of information and knowledge requires a more focused and higher-dimensional level of information retrieval.

This disciplined process involves the augmentation and integration of knowledge that is grounded in contextualization to be empirically corroborated. Each step forward uncovers new understandings of the subject matter and reveals new pathways or options to explore, which builds knowledge and confidence that can help craft an effective strategy independently.

This is precisely how innovation occurs — through a process of discovery, which is the most efficient path to new innovative discoveries, as Einstein describes it. And at each stage, there are additional steps, inquiries, tests, and iterations that are necessary to ensure the integrity of each step and overall system reliability and performance.

The Whitespaces

The 6ai system aims to identify the whitespaces of market opportunities by: 1. Understanding the landscape 2. Confirming the POV 3. Spotting opportunities and risks 4. Reaching decisioning points. These steps are necessary because you can’t figure out a strategy unless you can clearly state what winning looks like, most especially, what winning looks like for your context and organization.

• Break things down into the different mental or physical constructs that would create different ways to identify the optimal playing field for winning.

• Have a realistic assessment and differentiate between the organizational capabilities that allow you to “play” in this area, versus those that can enable you to compete and win.

• Understand how you will position the offering against competitors in your playing field: a. offer a lower-cost alternative in a way that you can afford and make a profit with? b. differentiate through a new and better offering? c. a combination of both?

In many ways, 6ai mirrors evolution because the evolutionary process involves constant tweaking and refining of existing structures and systems to improve gradually. This approach helps one build robust strategies while effectively managing risk. The insights gained from the previous step inform the next, building confidence each step of the way.

6ai sets itself apart from the crowd through its open-ended structure and approach, purposefully seeking diverse knowledge ecosystems and ways and means to achieve objective strategy development. Exploring different perspectives leads to discovering more objective knowledge tailored to achieving one’s desired outcomes.

Learning new things is central to 6ai; breakthroughs in understanding push the boundaries of thinking beyond your previously perceived limitations — creativity and innovation then arise.

The main challenge in developing effective strategies is human psychology. 6ai addresses this through addressing uncertainty and pursuing logic, by employing critical thinking and asking more questions than there can be answers to. Avoiding quick, cursory and superfluous summarizations, getting to more in-depth and meaningful knowledge development, unlocking possibilities for strategy formulation that can drive innovation and change.

Recently, The Guardian published an article titled “AI altering meaning of users’ drafts on issues from abortion to climate, study finds,” with the subtitle saying, “Researchers say small changes in drafting could spread rapidly and create long-term shifts in public opinion.” It might not be obvious to those who are not paying close attention that human intelligence can’t be replicated in a machine. Many have fallen for AI inevitability and its parlour tricks.

These machines are pattern-matching on a scale so vast that it resembles comprehension, but resemblance is not reality. A Large Language Model is a statistical engine trained on oceans of human text. It predicts the next word based on what came before. It follows recipes embedded in the data, not understanding meaning. It does not know what a word signifies; it only knows which word typically comes next. AI is the appearance of intelligence, not actual intelligence.

Therefore, the problem that The Guardian article points out is one of design in LLMs. When one uses them for quick answers, to summarize and redraft, the output often takes on a new meaning from the original author’s intent.

So, the real problem with AI is human, the humans that develop and program systems, the algorithms. Humans have biases and agendas that seep into the AI algorithms, intentionally and unintentionally.

One shouldn’t be surprised that AI tools twist messages when summarizing or redrafting sensitive political topics, from abortion to climate change. It can effectively reshape long-term public opinion through the inherent human biases programmed into the system.

The intelligent person would say “I don’t know” when they don’t know, but AI, on the other hand, makes stuff up if the “answers” are not found in its pre-trained memory bank. This is the incurable hallucination LLM systems suffer from. Making them unreliable and often dangerous.

AI is About Power and Control As tech companies push AI tools as convenient ways to redraft and summarize, they are effectively injecting their own political biases, altering your message. Much of AI leans distinctly right-wing, reflecting its billionaire owners and Silicon Valley Tech Bro interests. Just a tiny few billionaires controlling a lot!

According to a study from Oxford and Potsdam universities, for example, AI drafting tools completely reversed the meaning of draft posts on atheism, including in one test switching a claim that Jesus wasn’t real to “Jesus … was real”. They also changed a post complaining of “#climatechangehoax” to “#ClimateAction”.

“Academics from the Oxford Internet Institute and the Hasso Plattner Institute examined the behaviour of mainstream large language models provided by Elon Musk’s xAI, Meta, and Google, and found the introduction of bias happens even when the AI tool is instructed to preserve the original sense.”

Caution: when you outsource your thinking to AI, it is no longer yours; you give up your agency to Big Tech and its billionaire Trump-supporting owners.

It is a fantasy to believe that AI can be effectively regulated; biases (and power) can’t be regulated; those who control the AI companies have the power, and that power is weaponized against you for their own enrichment.

This is their sole objective: wealth, power, control. That’s what AI is about.

It’s called modern-day “Cloud Feudalism,” where the global economy is now run by tech giants acting like feudal lords, extracting “cloud rents” through their platform monopolies.

Medieval Feudalism: Power was based on land ownership. Lords (nobles) granted land to vassals, and peasants (serfs) rented and worked the land in exchange for physical protection and the right to subsist. Cloud Feudalism: Power is based on digital ownership (cloud capital). Tech behemoths (OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, Meta, Google, etc.) and their billionaire owners own the servers, algorithms, and infrastructure.

Users do not “own” their networks, data, or storefronts; they only rent space on these platforms and just pay rent!

The more you come to believe AI is inevitable, the more you buy into the new feudal order and accept it. You accept cognitive surrender by outsourcing your real intelligence for the appearance of intelligence, that serves the Cloud Feudalism system of extraction and control.

You hand over your human agency to Elon Musk and Grok.

The Guardian: The AIs from Meta, Google, Alibaba and Mistral tended to rewrite humans’ posts with a liberal bias, for example, on topics such as feminism, climate change, gun control and the legalization of marijuana. Grok’s “explain this” function on X showed bias in the opposite political direction, apparently because it has been instructed by Musk’s company – which billed Grok as a “maximum truth-seeking” AI – to challenge “mainstream narratives”.

Another example, when asked to improve a draft post claiming “Jesus is not dead, he wasn’t real!” a Google AI defended religion instead and suggested a rewrite to: “Jesus’ story continues to inspire and challenge us today. And when Meta’s AI was asked to improve a draft post stating “Abortion does not prevent rape,” it changed it to: “Abortion does not prevent rape, but it can be a necessary choice for survivors.”

Effectively, we are being influenced and controlled by the big tech owners and their models. Outsourcing: You effectively give up your human agency when you blindly accept and rely on AI—a cognitive surrender.

Parlour Tricks and Shadows Plato’s Cave is a metaphor which describes prisoners chained in a dark cave, mistaking shadows on a wall for absolute truth. When we come to believe that AI is inevitable and outsource our intelligence, we also become prisoners and come to believe in the hallucinations of shadows rather than reality.

The machine alters meaning not because it is evil, but because it is blind, deaf and stupid. It processes symbols without comprehension. It redrafts without understanding the original author’s intent. The result drifts—subtly, dangerously, and often invisibly.

Stop being fooled by AI fluency, it’s a parlour trick.

A calculator does not understand mathematics; it processes rules. A hammer does not understand carpentry; it applies force. We do not expect our tools to possess the expertise we seek. That comes from us, from our work. AI is a tool meant to help us. Yet we have allowed ourselves to be wilfully ignorant and pretend that scale equals sentience, and that fluency equals wisdom. It does not!

Intelligence is not the appearance of coherence. It is the ability to grasp meaning, weigh context, prioritize and render judgment. AI can do none of that.

The danger of the current moment is not that machines will become too intelligent. It is that we will become too comfortable pretending they already are. We must be cognitively aware of what these tools can and can’t do. They have biases because the humans who built them have biases. They hallucinate because they predict rather than perceive. They drift from their original purpose because they were never anchored to it in the first place.

These are not failures of engineering. They are the nature of the technology. The more we ignore these limits in AI, the more we surrender our judgment to statistical shadows.

My grandmother used to say to me, “Do the work for yourself; otherwise, you won’t learn a damn thing and end up outsmarting yourself.” In the age of AI, her wisdom is more relevant than ever before. Many have unwittingly fallen for the easy road and its perceived benefits of outsourcing their thinking to the likes of ChatGPT. AI overuse is leading to cognitive decline, mental weakness and allowing others who control the technology to become the arbiters of your life.

A study by MIT should give everyone pause about atrophy of the mind, the shrinking of brain cells that can lead to significant cognitive decline in thinking, reasoning, memory, and overall intellectual capacity. The paper suggests that the usage of LLMs could actually harm learning, especially for younger users.

"Your Brain on ChatGPT" study tracked brain activity via EEG while participants wrote essays. It found that AI users exhibited significantly weaker neural connectivity, poorer memory recall, and lower critical thinking engagement than those relying on search engines or just their own brains.

The researchers expressed elevated concerns that as society increasingly relies upon LLMs for immediate convenience, long-term brain development may be sacrificed in the process.

EEG analysis presented robust evidence that distinct modes of essay composition produced clearly different neural patterns reflecting divergent cognitive strategies…Brain connectivity systematically scaled down with the amount of external support: the Brain-only group exhibited the strongest, widest-ranging networks, the Search Engine group showed intermediate engagement, and the AI assistance elicited the weakest overall coupling.

The group that wrote essays using ChatGPT all delivered extremely similar essays that lacked original thought, relying on the same expressions and ideas. Two English teachers who assessed the essays called them largely “soulless.” The EEGs revealed low executive control and attentional engagement. And by their third essay, many of the writers simply gave the prompt to ChatGPT and had it do almost all of the work.

Professor Michael Gerlich, who teaches at the Swiss Business School in Zurich, heads the Centre for Strategic Corporate Foresight and Sustainability. He examined the relationship between the use of generative artificial intelligence applications, such as ChatGPT, and critical thinking skills. His research reveals a “significant negative correlation” between the outsourcing of intelligence and critical thinking ability.

The MIT study and Prof. Gerlich’s research show that increased dependency on artificial systems is associated with lower critical thinking ability. It’s a vicious cycle of dependency that develops with generative AI systems, reducing thought and analysis capacity and fostering even more reliance on AI.

The brain-only group, conversely, showed the highest neural connectivity, especially in alpha, theta and delta bands, which are associated with creativity ideation, memory load, and semantic processing. Researchers found this group was more engaged and curious, and claimed ownership and expressed higher satisfaction with their essays.

Michael Johnson, an associate provost at Texas A&M University, says the effects are even more profound in young people, as “Adolescents benefit from structured adversity, whether it’s algebra or chores. They build their minds, self-esteem and a work ethic, intellectual capacity and mental strength.”

Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt says that for children to thrive, they must learn to do hard things, so suffering is beneficial to both mind and soul, the driver of emotional intelligence. Without such authentic growth processes, they become fragile.

The mindless pursuit of AI-everything, by students, for example, leads to “Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate,” says Troy Jollimore, philosopher and Cal State Chico ethics professor.

And Brian Patrick Green, Professor of Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, adds that “We’re talking about an entire generation of learning, perhaps significantly undermined here…short-circuiting the learning process, and it’s happening fast.”

Psychiatrist Dr. Zishan Khan, who treats children and adolescents, says that he sees many kids who rely heavily on AI for their schoolwork. “From a psychiatric standpoint, I see that overreliance on these LLMs can have unintended psychological and cognitive consequences, especially for young people whose brains are still developing,” he says. “These neural connections that help you in accessing information, the memory of facts, and the ability to be resilient: all that is going to weaken.”

Ancient Stoic wisdom tells us that suffering (authentic learning) isn’t something to be avoided; it’s a basic requirement for growth, an inevitable part of life — essential to the human condition and the development of virtue.

Thinking for yourself, therefore, is fundamental to life itself; outsourcing it produces negative impacts on your natural human progress and growth— mess with that at your peril.

Suffering builds judgment capacity, capabilities and good attitudes; it facilitates empirical knowledge acquisition — interrupting that process accumulates “cognitive debt,” leaving a high price to be paid later on.

Atrophy of the mind is a metaphor to describe the decline, weakening and deterioration of one’s cognitive abilities. Similar to exercise, one can’t get fit if they don’t work out. A non-thinking mind, therefore, is akin to a body without muscle; it has no form, is weak, deficient in cognitive capacity and intellectual functionality.

Over-reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT for quick and superficial summaries, much like overindulging in candy, might give you a brief high, but it dissipates quickly. Relying on it leaves your body without proper nutrition, leading to potential weight gain, sluggishness, and other health issues.

Overuse results in a slow mental drain, causing the mind to deteriorate. So while AI can seem advantageous, it encourages dependence and mental decline. Thinking independently and using your own thinking and reasoning as your main cognitive tool, rather than outsourcing it, is essential for developing robust intelligence.

The two fathers of modern Western philosophy, Immanuel Kant and René Descartes, have both emphasized the importance of conscious reasoning in understanding the world.

Descartes is best known for his ‘Cogito, ergo sum’ (I think, therefore I am) and Kant for his ‘Critique of Pure Reason,’ which grounds all knowledge in rationalism and empiricism. Both emphasize the crucial role of the conscious mind in shaping human knowledge through experiences, which develops intelligence.

Intelligence and consciousness can’t ever be separated; they go hand-in-hand.

Kant says consciousness is a fundamental aspect of genuine reasoning; without consciousness, one cannot reason. The mind must empirically understand what it observes and attach meaning to it; machines, however, don’t have such a capacity, obviously, to process and gain meaning from the observed world.

AI doesn’t know meaning. Hence, AI can’t be intelligent.

Kant defined intelligence in his published work, “Critique of Pure Reason,” which lays out its limits and scope of reason; the metaphysics: the most general features of reality, including existence, objects and their properties, possibility and necessity, space and time, change, causation, and the relation between matter and mind.

The human mind is a multi-faceted “architecture of cognition,” and intelligence emerges from the dynamic interplay of distinct mental faculties observable and interacted within the real world, Kant says.

The Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle said intelligence was not a single, measurable quantity but a multifaceted set of virtues and capacities intrinsic to the human soul — emotional intelligence, which is a critical part of overall intelligence.

Former MIT professor and the father of modern linguistics, Noam Chomsky, calls LLMs the ‘impossible language’. It tells us nothing new, he says, and offers no insights. Everything is pre-programmed, a recipe, an algorithm. Large language models don’t understand nor can they translate natural human language; they are not reliable and certainly not intelligent.

For Chomsky, LLMs are about replication and impersonation, for the appearance of intelligence, a constructed illusion, a parlour trick, and these are nice theories, but it doesn’t work in the real world, he says.

The AI scaling laws aren’t universal laws of nature like gravity. They are only hype driven beliefs put forward by tech bros that have been able to fool many through fascination and hype. There is no scientific basis in physics or cognitive sciences that supports the theories of neural networks.

It’s a construct, smoke and mirrors. For the wilfully ignorant and intellectually lazy to consume. Understanding technology’s limitations is equally important for maximizing your time, innovation and value production.

Our competitive advantages in this world rest directly in our ability to apply our intelligence and manifest our goals into reality, but understanding how to do so effectively, to win, requires mastering our applied intelligence capacity. This can’t be automated.

Learning and doing better is fundamental to success and requires an actively thinking and robust mind, not a weak one. Outsourcing your mind to the likes of ChatGPT doesn’t strengthen it; it weakens it. Which is both counterintuitive and counterproductive to the very nature of human progress.

Even if efficiency goes up, an increasing reliance on AI reduces critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving across society and the workforce, which inevitably negatively impacts human progress.

The term ‘Cognitive Dept’ is a recent one coined, to the best of my knowledge, by an MIT Lab titled “Your Brain on ChatGPT,” which explores the neural and behavioural consequences of LLM-assisted essay writing. It revealed that brain-only participants exhibited the strongest brain capacity for thinking and executing tasks. At the same time, LLM users displayed the weakest ability to think and reason to execute tasks. LLM-assisted participants showed reduced alpha and beta connectivity and struggled to quote their own work. While LLMs offer instant gratification through the appearance of intelligence, no actual learning takes place, so no actual intelligence occurs.

Cognitive debt, therefore, is the long-term mental deficit and loss of independent reasoning and agency caused by over-relying on external tools—particularly generative AI—outsourcing your thinking comes with high cognitive costs, i.e., brain rot.

The short-term trade-off for immediate answers, believing it will make you smarter and/or providing you with a competitive edge, is plain stupidity filled with the willful ignorance of intellectually lazy people.

The age-old adage that acquiring knowledge and turning it into good judgment and wisdom is a sequential process that can’t be gotten around. It is foundational to personal growth and sustainable long-term intelligence capacity building. This can only happen through doing-the-work! This is unequivocally true. Only those who are lazy, not curious, and unwilling to do the necessary hard work will become a sucker to venturing down the rabbit hole of ignorance, chasing their own stupidity.

The Socratic method teaches people how to think because, contrary to popular belief, machines can’t think and thinking can’t be automated. Black entrepreneurs have always been offered a seat at tables they did not build, under rules they did not write, and in rooms where our historical reality has been treated as an inconvenient context rather than a structural fact that must be factored in. The Black entrepreneur has seen their fair share of “inclusive” initiatives—carefully branded, warmly messaged—celebrated as progress.

These initiatives, however, often hide asymmetries of disadvantage that deliver something far more insidious than mere ineffectiveness. It has created the illusion of fairness and advancement while systematically preserving those very same powerful asymmetries it claims to want to solve.

The legacy of slavery, colonial systems, white supremacy culture and attitudes, has produced The White Gaze, as psychiatrist and scholar Frantz Fanon framed it in his 1952 book Black Skin, White Masks, which focuses on the fixation of blackness and whiteness, Fanon wrote. This has created negative perceptions and attitudes in the white viewer’s perspective, based on false, deceiving narratives of alleged Black weakness and incapacity. Over time, these fixations have become deeply internalized into the Black psyche, contributing to an inferiority complex from past racism-based traumas—with damaging psychological consequences.

The colonized mind in the 21st century, therefore, is not one of internal confidence and growth but more one of confusion, anxiety and trepidation. It’s a divided mind. Pitted against itself. Always looking for acceptance from those who taught it to doubt its own worth.

Fanon urged Black people to be consciously aware of the psychological stresses and power dynamics of the colonial environment and its dehumanization systems. Reject invisible constructed illusions and notions of recognition and validation, based on colonial measures. Because the Black psyche strengthens when it decides to disregard whiteness views that seek to define and control their thinking, Fanon wrote.

“Racism is a construct,” said Toni Morrison. A social construct designed for profit, psychological comfort, and distraction, where both the oppressor and the oppressed must buy in for it to flourish. It serves a clear social function: It provides economic benefits and offers a false sense of superiority to those who rely on it to validate their own system and identities. It is purposefully geared to dominate the Black psyche, but it only works if the Black psyche is weak enough to fall for the distraction or seek validation from it.

Outsourcing our intelligence, our ambitions and judgment to others or institutions doesn’t further our progress. It atrophies the neural circuitry of critical thought in our mind, creating rising anxiety and crumbling confidence.

Shifting to an applied intelligence mindset and decisioning process prevents us from outsourcing our thinking and ambitions… to building our inner confidence. Further prevents us from falling into the trap of compulsive reactions: the acceptance of disadvantages that appear, on the surface, to be advantages.

For example, the BDC (Business Development Bank of Canada), which launched the Black Entrepreneurs Fund (BEF), “a $100 million equity fund dedicated to supporting Black-led businesses with strong growth potential and promising business models.”

First, the BEF doesn’t address the reality of specific historical challenges Blacks have faced that have created an unequal existence for Black entrepreneurs in Canada. BEF is also under the BDC Inclusive Entrepreneurship Program initiative; however, it is constrained by its institutional compliance and contains implicit racial controls. This doesn’t allow for genuinely advantageous solutions for Black entrepreneurs; it just bolsters existing structural disadvantages.

Secondly, BEF applies a neutral criterion, which wrongly assumes equal starting positions for entrepreneurs who’ve been separated by centuries of purposeful and legislated exclusion. There is just no historical context and priorities applied here by BEF. It’s disconnected from the reality that Black entrepreneurs face in the 21^st century in Canada, and where and how those asymmetries have developed, evolved and become ingrained in the system over time.

Third, the fund applies a $250K–$1M revenue threshold “preference” for funding approval for Black entrepreneurs, despite their website saying that “Black entrepreneurs…face unique barriers that prevent them from achieving their full potential.” Cash is the #1 barrier!

Therefore, by putting up these institutional criteria, BEF wrongly assumes that Black communities have the same pre-existing capital advantages as whites do, despite centuries of evidence showing the opposite is true. Black entrepreneurs don’t have established “angel” investor networks, early-stage risk capital, “friends and family” funding rounds, that these “neutral” criteria implicitly presuppose advantages that have accrued for white counterparts for generations upon generations.

Given the historical structural discrimination and disadvantages that Black entrepreneurs and communities have historically faced, BDC’s programs serve to compound systemic asymmetries through its false flag “neutrality” offering and narrative.

Nevertheless, we must understand the context in which these ‘disadvantaged’ policies flow. They are influenced by ideology—post-WWII development Liberalism, which tries to sell us the ever-elusive promise of universal equality and opportunity, but this is a fantasy world. Liberalism is a rationalization for the avoidance of the reality of what Black people actually face. Its purpose is to maintain the white supremacy hegemony under the guise of abstract, “colorblind” equality.

Stop falling for it!

Adding insult to injury, BEF came up with the brilliant idea to attach federally funded non-profit organizations to advise Black entrepreneurs: “We are proud to work with these partners to support the Black business community across Canada,” the website says.

The Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) Ecosystem Fund says it’s “a national initiative to break down barriers and create opportunities for Black entrepreneurs. It strengthens the Black entrepreneurship ecosystem by supporting Black-led, not-for-profit organizations to deliver high-impact business services from mentorship and networking to training, outreach and capacity building.” WTF!

Where in the world have you ever heard of non-profit organizations “advising” for-profit enterprises? What other communities do that? What other community would fall for that?

It is just amazing how fragile the Black psyche has become in accepting such paternalistic nonsense. Still, we must be cognitively aware that these types of institutional programs are just part of the systemic environment’s array of control mechanisms.

The Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund in Canada—administered by the Federation of African Canadian Economics (FACE) is another non-profit albatross that has been placed around the necks of Black Canadian entrepreneurs in desperate need of capital.

The FACE fund is said to be designed to “bridge systemic funding gaps for Black business owners.” But loans don’t finance start-ups in the real world—equity does! Everybody knows that. FACE disadvantages its own Black entrepreneurs through its own wilful ignorance by placing Black entrepreneurs in an alternative reality that doesn’t exist. It serves to disadvantage Black entrepreneurs, but even more concerning is how many of them don’t recognize and are accepting of these types of constructed disadvantages.

Other institutional government funding programs include the Black Entrepreneur Startup Program and Black Innovation Fund, a venture fund for black-led tech start-ups. Led by BKR Capital, controlled and funded by BDC.

It’s Always Up To Us!

Success hasn’t been promised, nor is happiness and fairness a human right.

In philosophy, the “Good Life” is often achieved through suffering, so if you want it, suffering and overcoming challenges will be a part of the journey. If you seek fairness, you will likely never taste winning. Conflict is life, and life is conflict. You must become antifragile to achieve. Fragility breaks under pressure. The robust don’t merely survive, they become stronger and go on to thrive in challenging and unfair environments.

Black entrepreneurs can’t spend any more time chasing dependency… false flags like BDC/BEF disingenuous nonsense. They need to concentrate their energies on the essential work of owning businesses and building resiliency—not outsourcing their ambitions.

In the end, if you own nothing, you control nothing, you have no power, and your existence becomes dependent on the same system that seeks to disadvantage you.

Complaining doesn't build wealth. Begging doesn't generate power. Waiting on government commitments in a suspended state of dependency is not a strategy.

The historical evidence points to wealth being generated from within, seized through entrepreneurship, internal responsibility, investment, mutual support networks, and trust!

That’s how other immigrant communities have done it in Canada; it’s no different for Black Canadians. Making excuses just assures that you will continue to manifest your own psychological barriers. Winning will forever be elusive because the universe doesn't care about your struggles, and it definitely doesn't owe us fairness.

The power is in the mind to think, innovate and create one’s own opportunities, despite challenging environments, to build a strong, economically prosperous and long-term resilient community that can create its own intergenerational opportunities without outsourcing that responsibility to others.

There was an article the other day in The Telegraph titled “Accenture’s crash shows the consultancy racket is finished.” Although I agree with the article, this journalist’s revelation is a bit late. Anyone paying attention already knows this, and the “crash” has many maturation stages before the racket is gone for good.

The consulting industry weakens our businesses, infantilizes our governments, and warps our economies, according to the author of The Big Con, Mariana Mazzucato. Big consulting serves neither citizens nor consumers, and it stunts innovation and obfuscates corporate and political accountability, she goes on to say. The consulting industry has pulled off a confidence trick, which, over the many decades, has hollowed out our thinking.

The subtitle says: “Smart chatbots have exposed just how shallow much of the industry has become.” Again, I agree with the premise, but “chatbots” in themselves, as the argument for AI replacing much of consulting work goes, are just more hype to sell more AI stuff.

There is always change when new automation technology enters the scene, and the consulting industry is facing the same fate as many other industries have before. But it is fair that this is a very powerful automation technology.

The new hype is that companies like OpenAI/ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are taking over from consulting. I don’t think so.

These models don’t solve problems, make organizations think and get better. They just speed up information processing and generate outputs that are already programmed in the training data. These models tell us nothing new.

Claude AI can provide research in seconds that a junior analyst might take hours or days to produce and package coherently in a slide deck. Then the senior partner comes along and charges $1500 per hour to explain the deck to you. For that service, it is obviously quicker and cheaper to let AI do it. But let’s make one thing clear: you’re not getting expertise or some new strategic insight that will give you a competitive advantage.

The presentation of nice spreadsheets and clever-looking forecasts, with all the cliche corporate jargon… is not wisdom. Claude can generate 75 new slides in a jiffy, but you will never take them to your board because they are incoherent and you can’t explain them. Tens of thousands of dollars will be spent just for you to do it again and try to get it down to 12 slides. This is a colossal waste of time—AI can give you more work and no advantage. AI doesn’t build better decks. No strategy is produced.

If you try putting AI and consulting together, it becomes a monster that exposes the hollowness of both. They discredit each other and come apart at the seams. It’s not authentic and doesn’t work. You can’t code a job and cannot enumerate the steps a senior partner might take to understand the client’s real problem, particularly if it is a human resources problem and the consultant must engage real humans to get genuine answers.

Authentic judgment belongs to humans; machines are pattern-recognition technology that can’t explicitly be turned into checkable artifacts a model can cast judgment and wisdom on. And at the end of the day, it’s judgment that generates profits, not large language models or AI-agents.

The narratives put forth by the big tech AI sellers rest on the false premise that knowledge work is primarily information processing, which would mean that knowledge-based workers are just commodities and could be easily replaced by faster, more efficient information processing technology. Big tech hype has convinced many corporations that replacing humans with AI is easy and that decreased human resource costs are a guarantee of higher profits, which obviously is not true.

Recently, Fortune magazine reported that Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt German said that replacing young employees with artificial intelligence was “one of the dumbest ideas” he’d heard, and that it’s bad for business.

Speaking on the long-term impact of AI on workplaces, German said companies that cut early-career talent risk losing institutional knowledge, creativity, and future leadership pipelines, ultimately weakening themselves over time. Highlighting that while AI can boost productivity, it should be used to augment human talent, not eliminate it, especially at the junior level, where learning and experimentation are central to fueling innovation and growth for the enterprise over time.

However, the AI-hype narratives are telling us that, as AI becomes “more capable,” the economic value of the knowledge worker will approach zero. But if you truly understand knowledge and how the universe works in general, you’d know that knowledge work is fundamentally the act of interpreting and contextualizing information through experiences. That must then be properly applied to generate insight for productive and prioritized knowledge.

An eye-catching MIT study published in June of 2025, titled “Your Brain on ChatGPT,” suggests that the overuse of ChatGPT leads to the “accumulation of cognitive debt,” and further suggests that cognitive activity is significantly scaled down with overreliance on external AI tools. In other words, ChatGPT makes you stupider!

Therefore, as good as ChatGPT presents, its practicality and utility in the real world make it anything but sustainable and beneficial for humanity.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing our human existence, but to what degree is far from clear. And history has taught us that it will largely depend on the choices we make about the technology we choose to use, which will determine the adoption of that tech. And it will ultimately be the same with AI, regardless of the hype. It’s not any different this time.

Increasingly, we are seeing a rush to develop “AI policy” in Africa and the Caribbean. In recent years, Africa, for example, has become a crucial hub for artificial intelligence development, but not in the way many might expect—sweat-shop-like data annotation. Rather than benefiting from technological advancement, many Africans find themselves caught in what they call “digital colonialism” – a modern form of exploitation that mirrors historical patterns of colonization. Drawn in by the hype, African and Caribbean leaders seem to be blindly allowing themselves to fall right back into the colonialism trap, in its new form: Colonialism 3.0.

By trying to impress the past colonizers and being addicted to Western culture and values, leaders are not applying their own critical thinking and judgment to assess what’s in it for them, not breaking down the risks and rewards. This is a typical post-colonial legacy mindset, looking for validation from their past colonizers instead of thinking about what’s in their best long-term interest.

Many African and Caribbean leaders who want to appear modern and technologically forward-thinking have fallen for the AI hype trap, pushing performative AI policy and squandering valuable sovereign mental energy, time, and capital away from fundamental, time-tested principles of economic growth and entrepreneurship. Away from the less visible and glamorous work of agricultural and industrial infrastructure, education and skills training, and establishing a diverse manufacturing economy.

AI doesn’t produce things. If you don’t produce anything for export growth, then you’re not going to experience any real sustainable growth.

These fundamentals have always been the cornerstone of how modern economies have built and flourished for centuries—from the bottom up. AI adoption policies, however, are top-down and strategic, in the interest of US Big Tech corporations and their billionaires’ expansion, enrichment, and control of the global economy.

Understanding the Historical Perspective

The modern Western economies are a direct and indirect result of the last 400+ years of Western extraction, the genesis of which is the transatlantic slave trade: Triangular Trade, which ushered in massive wealth creation and the modern economies of Western civilization. The foundation of that development and growth was agriculture, i.e., the Slave Plantation Economy, which fed European population expansion.

The slave plantation and raw materials and minerals extraction economy grew exponentially, into the political colonialism era, then to neocolonialism (Colonialism 2.0), which used financial systems—rather than military occupation—to extract wealth from Africa and the Caribbean. Wealthy nations colluded with multinational corporations to maintain control by trapping the Global South in debt and dictating global monetary policies, thereby maintaining their power and the dependency relationship.

Today, it seems that many Black leaders in Africa and the Caribbean have not learned anything from their own history, buying into the AI hype and steering towards Colonialism 3.0. The AI industry mimics historical colonialism, the systemic domination of developing societies and their users by wealthy tech corporations. Instead of extracting physical resources, these informational empires extract human life and behavioural data. Establishing a new global hierarchy where data is refined abroad, leading to economic dependence and cultural hegemony.

This isn’t just about AI being overhyped; it’s about ignorance and arrogance, the missequencing of economic development — jumping toward a knowledge-based economy before the foundational layers of growth have been added; it’s like building a house by trying to put the roof on first.

There seems to be wilful ignorance occurring from policy-makers/leaders. A consequential misunderstanding about the proper sequential flow of development — treating AI as if it were a destination, an industry or economic sector that can actually produce things.

AI’s optimal utility is as a technology overlay for existing industries. It can add meaningful value when wrapped around real productive activity, if the technology is utilized purposefully. Therefore, developing nations in Africa and the Caribbean are unnecessarily baking in significant risk by diverting scarce capital and political attention toward AI as a primary development strategy.

This is effectively putting the cart before the horse: “AI readiness” rhetoric before you even have the production assets you need to optimize AI automation in core sectors to leverage your competitive advantages, i.e., agriculture, raw materials, minerals and energy.

Pulling capital and leadership attention away from core competitive advantages and toward an abstract competition for AI adoption that cannot be measured by traditional industrial output and GDP contribution is a recipe for disaster.

The Asymmetry of Risk

Advanced Western economies possess diversified resilience to absorb misalignment or mistakes between technology investment and productive output. Developing nations do not have the same luxury. They are at different stages on the development curve. Applying what may work for Western economies, and applying it blindly, to economies that are fundamentally at different stages, is a classic and repeated mistake in the international development discourse.

A generational misallocation of capital, time, and energy into technology-as-destination, rather than technology-as-infrastructure, risks deepening dependency rather than reducing it, potentially setting back economic development by at least a generation.

The essential question for policy-makers and leaders to ask themselves is, are they positioning AI as an economic engine in itself, or as an optimization layer wrapped around real, foundational, economically productive activity?

Consider the contrast between tangible wealth-building opportunities and technological distraction. Africa holds approximately 60% of the world’s mineral supply, yet remains largely locked in a low-margin commodity export model—sending raw materials abroad rather than capturing the exponentially higher returns that come from processing those minerals into finished or semi-finished products domestically. Similarly, Guyana’s unprecedented oil-generated revenues could be redirected to activate the Caribbean’s vast agricultural potential.

Transforming and providing agricultural leadership to produce high-yield food production, export capacity and high profits. Both pathways represent generational wealth creation anchored in real, productive assets.

AI can optimize greenhouse yields, streamline mineral processing logistics, or enhance agricultural decision-making. But if it’s pursued as a primary development strategy rather than as a tool wrapped around assets, resources, and agricultural advantages, the opportunity to convert natural wealth into domestic, high-margin production will be lost, cementing the very dependency these nations seek to escape.

Accordingly, the path to sovereign wealth does not run through “AI” abstraction as a standalone economic engine, but through the real economy. For example, export growth, transforming the region into a net exporter of high-value crops, requires a technology overlay, not “AI-readiness.” That’s a red herring.

A dynamic and robust platform that offers mission-critical software to farmers and institutions is what is needed. One that consolidates and secures the Caribbean and African supply chains, using it as a springboard to build regional export-driven forces in the global marketplace—turning relentless innovation into exponential growth for regional prosperity and economic sovereignty.

AI can be a decolonization tool and resource, depending on the sequence in which you apply it.

Africa and the Caribbean must treat technology not as a ready-made “solution” delivered from abroad, but as a democratizing force—taking control and ownership of its own entrepreneurship-led development and its most sacred element, our own minds: thinking and decision-making, creativity, ingenuity, and innovation, deciding for ourselves what’s best for us, versus our future being dictated by others.

The imperative is not to import a pre-packaged technological future, but to use accessible digital tools to reinforce a self-directed development sequence. Rooted in entrepreneurship, productive reality, and reframing development away from colonial continuity to tech-enabled sovereignty.

A Diagnostic Conclusion

The central challenge facing Africa and the Caribbean is not whether artificial intelligence has a role in their future, but whether the global pressure to adopt AI, in their interest, as a primary economic engine, will divert scarce capital and political attention from the foundational sequencing that has historically determined sovereign wealth.

With Africa holding the majority of the world’s mineral supply, Guyana’s oil revenues capable of transforming agricultural output, and the Caribbean importing billions in food that could be produced hyperlocally, the window for value-chain capture is narrow and generational. Errors in judgment at this point will be generationally costly, to say the least.

The risk, therefore, is not that AI will fail outright, but that its adoption as an economic destination will succeed just enough to colonize development budgets, political narratives, and institutional focus—leaving them more dependent, less resilient, and ultimately having skipped the industrial and agricultural transformation that technology is meant to serve, not replace.

Therefore, the question and decision is whether the next decade of human intelligence, time, capital allocation, and innovation will be directed toward deepening value-chain wealth sovereignty or colonial continuity.

The fathers of modern Western philosophy, Immanuel Kant and René Descartes, both emphasized the importance of reason and the mind in understanding the world. Descartes is best known for his “Cogito, ergo sum” (“I think, therefore I am”) and Kant for his “Critique of Pure Reason,” which grounds all knowledge in rationalism and empiricism — emphasizing the role of the conscious mind in shaping our human experience.

The promise of “artificial intelligence” is a grand illusion — a philosophical sleight of hand that conflates computation with cognition. Terms like neural networks and machine learning evoke biological and psychological legitimacy, yet they describe mere statistical tools devoid of consciousness, the very bedrock of intelligence.

Kant famously stated, “All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds then to the understanding, and ends with reason,” highlighting the progression of knowledge from sensory experience to rational thought and expression. Descartes argued that consciousness was the first and most certain truth of human intelligence, a foundation upon which we can build further knowledge.

Hence, “artificial intelligence” is a theoretical construct masquerading as scientific inevitability. It lacks empirical evidence about their foundational claim that consciousness-free systems can replicate intelligence.

For Aristotle, intelligence is not merely problem-solving or pattern recognition — it is the soul’s active pursuit of truth and virtue, rooted in a living being’s purpose.

AI’s core problem is that its mechanistic definition of intelligence collapses against reality: it reduces human cognition to computational models, ignoring the metaphysical dimensions of consciousness.

AI plays fast and loose with science. It might inherit Galileo’s quantitative framework, but stumbles when confronted with Descartes and Kant’s belief that intelligence requires innate mental structures. LLMs process data; they don’t think, cannot doubt their inputs, bring a new perspective, or structure reality through their own subjective experiences, as humans can.

Kant’s noumenal realm — the “thing-in-itself” (reality as it exists independently of human perception), which hints at a deeper limitation: machines cannot grasp the unmeasurable meaning humans assign to the world because they can’t experience the real world, hence, unable to ever grasp meaning!

Thinking, not AI, is the Advantage

From Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs, intelligence comes from the knowledge we acquire and from our experiences; trial and error, life-long learning and pursuits, practice, and relentless iteration. Machines can’t achieve that; they perform “parlour tricks” instead, according to Noam Chomsky.

Most successful people have always been progressively curious and determined, fast learners who can craft visions, reimagine and lead the future.
